And if you’re a fascinoma fan, you’ll love this book, which is full of them.Some of the stories are funny, some are spooky, many are just plain weird… but fun as they are, they do collectively make a serious point: often the most important thing a doctor can do for a patient is simply to listen and pay attention, because the most irrelevant-seeming details in a medical history or even casual remarks can provide the clues that explain an otherwise mysterious condition. It’s a fact that not only doctors but, even more importantly, the healthcare bean-counters who expect those doctors to do their jobs by rote and pill and test after only a few minutes of conversation, need to pay far more attention to.

Great book short read but fascinating really gets you thinking how lucky you may be and how unlucky others may be
I get a kick out of books like this. Meador is a physician who gathered stories from other physicians about cases they found perplexing. Usually these were cases of medical conditions that were so rare, they may of heard of them happening in school but would never see a case in real life. So when it actually happened, only those doctors who were really prepared actually would know what they were dealing with. Sometimes, cases were emerging diseases happening in this country...and the doctors who recognized them were from other countries. I'm afraid that's going to happen more often in the near future with the easy transportation of people from country to country.
Many times stories like these are 'Eureka' moments for both the physicians and the readers. Some of the cases I knew the answers before I got very far, others I didn't have the foggiest idea what the problem was. It is nice to pick up a book like this and learn something new that you didn't know before.
My big problem with this book was that many of these stories seemed a little old. I was expecting a few more recent stories in this compendium than were actually there. I'm hoping to find more recent stories in the future...
Quite a short book, and many of the stories seem to have been submitted by the same few doctors. Many of the stories are also not "new" in that I have heard or read very similar ones before. Most of them are not terribly mysterious. A quick and easy read but not very satisfying for those looking for real medical detail.
Very short stories about medical problems many without a resolution. A typical sentence, "We never heard back from that patient." So they don't really have what exactly happened, just what they think might have happened.
Cute little book. As a retired RN who enjoys mystery diagnosis, unusual cases, I enjoyed it. Light reading, OK for laypersons. Two or three of the stories seemed a bit obvious, but I guess that's just my background getting the way.
I loved this book. The cases were presented in a clear manner and the information given was to the point without a lot of "filler". Some other reviewers seemed to think they are too short, but I thought they contained just the right amount of information from the history to the testing results to the announcement of what the condition was. I figured out some of the cases and I had heard of others (like the cause for the clumsy teen) but have never seen a case of it personally. Great fun for those in the medical field who enjoy putting the clues together and seeing if you got it right. The only mistake I caught was where the author called an echocardiogram an EKG.
My first encounter with Dr Meador’s work was reading True Medical Detective Stories, reviewed [here]. As you’ll read, I wasn’t really all that thrilled in that he was no Berton Roueché (who is), but it was well-worth the read as a snack-food book.
This time, the vignettes were written by other health professionals, outlining interesting cases and for the most part, were well-worth the read. Some of the essays were well-done or interesting, some were neither.
This was a perfect read for post-lunch reading (which is the time I put aside in reading science books as opposed to the cozy mysteries I tend to read during the evening hours). And I would recommend it if you enjoy short writings about interesting medical cases.
I’ll give this book 3.9 stars – well worth reading as long as you don’t pay full price.
